What is Solar Energy

Almost forty years ago, solar-powered devices such as calculators and watches were the rage for those who were aware of the energy crisis or just appreciated novelty gadgets.  Well, by the end of the seventies, the novelty wore off as many realized that calculators and other solar-powered devices not only needed to be used indoors but when the sun went down as well.

This wasn’t the first attempt to create solar power.  Unofficial records go as far back as 1860, when inventors tried to use coal as a source of natural energy as it was the main source used to heat homes and keep things sanitary.  The problem was that burned coal doesn’t keep the air clean and continuous inhalation could be dangerous to one’s respiratory system.

Years later, PV (photovoltaic) systems based on solar power would gain more success in keeping the air clean and saving energy.  It converts natural sunlight into electricity, either by photovoltaic — a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity by the use of a semiconductor — or, by the use of concentrated solar power. The latter is where mirrors or lenses are used to convert a large amount of sunlight into a small area.

The timing couldn’t have been better due to many turning to the green lifestyle as a way to save our planet so that these resources will be there for future generations. By using electronics and accessories that can be recharged as well as recycling paper and plastic products, we all can make a huge difference in saving the planet and relying on foreign countries to help supply our energy.  It’s also important to educate others so that they can take part as well.

Newer homes have solar paneling and other energy saving devices added on to save energy and cut utility costs.  Though the costs may be included in the price, many will find it pleasing to find that their utility bill greatly reduced.  Also, they could be eligible for tax breaks or other government rebates.

By converting to a green household, gone are the worries of gas leaks and inhalation by you and your family. In states like California, rebate programs and tax credits are available to homeowners who choose solar energy systems for their home.  Then there are utility companies that offer incentives to those by that can cut a monthly bill by more than half.  They even offer credits back to residential customers called Solar Renew Energy Credits (SRECs), in the case of a home generating more solar power than needed.
