Batteries: Re-Conditioning vs. Disposal

In recent years, the price of batteries has gone up with the recession.  Either smaller packs don’t last as long as they once did or a retailer may only have bulk packs for sale.  For the person looking to save money, the choice can be tricky as they need to assess how often the batteries will be used in everyday life.  Disposables may work fine for some but for the household that has many remotes and other electronics that run on batteries, it may be wise to invest in a battery charging service.

This may sound expensive or elaborate but really it isn’t.  There are some small businesses that have special equipment to find out whether your battery is worth the time and energy of recharging.  See, some dead batteries may actually harm home battery chargers that can be bought at any retail or hardware store.  A person may think that the charger is cheap, worn out or inferior but the problem may actually lie within the battery itself.

Now, to eliminate this problem is a little gadget called a computerized battery analyzer.  These are not likely to be found at mass discount stores and can be a little pricey for the average consumer as they run at least $100.

Here’s where the investment comes in.  Not only do they detect dead batteries, meaning they have no chance at life and should be disposed of right away, but it also charges undamaged batteries that have a little bit of life in them.  Some people who invest in these take time to learn tips and other ways to recondition batteries for repeated usage.  Eventually, they may create a side business geared toward a clientele that prefers a green lifestyle – or just wants to save money.

For the person who uses batteries sometimes, this may be a bit much.  However, households with video games, televisions, portable electronics that do not require AC charging, this may be worth a try.  It certainly beats buying battery chargers that may be unreliable.

If a person has moderate battery usage, it may be best to buy disposable batteries in bulk. Sometimes coupons may be found either online or in the Sunday paper for large or multiple packs of disposable batteries.  Regardless of brand or fancy advertisements, they all pretty much work the same – even generic or store brands which tend to sell for less anyway.

Bulk packs are designed to last a while but if a person finds themselves replacing their disposable batteries every six months or less, they may want to consider converting over to lithium rechargeable batteries for certain items.

For the light user who doesn’t want to spend a lot of money, they should check out dollar discount stores in their area.  Many of these places sell two and four-pack disposables for a dollar or less.  A word of caution would be to watch the expiration date on the package as some are discontinued by the manufacturer and may have been sitting on a shelf for a few years.
