Solar Power

If you were around in the 1970s, you may have been fascinated by either calculators or wristwatches that were solar powered, meaning it worked in direct sunlight.  Problem is that these items require indoor use as well and though some came with a battery back or AC charger, the novelty soon wore off.

Or so it seemed.

Actually, efforts to develop solar power for consumer use go back to the 1860s when an unfounded rumor based on the lack of coal began to surface.  Back then, coal was the main source of energy to heat homes and keep personal space sanitary.

But when it came to keeping the air clean, coal missed the mark as ongoing inhalation of the fumes could be fatal.

Enter PV (photovoltaic) systems based on solar power.

This system is based on the act of converting natural sunlight into electricity, either by photovoltaics — a method of generating electrical power by converting solar radiation into direct current electricity by the use of a semiconductor — or, by the use of concentrated solar power. The latter is where mirrors or lenses are used to convert a large amount of sunlight into a small area.

While those calculators with the sometimes invisible display are a thing of the past, saving energy has become more popular than ever.  Every day, more people are converting to the green lifestyle, which means less waste and more energy to go around the world.  This is accomplished by using electronics and accessories that are rechargeable, re-using paper and plastics and encouraging others to take the initiative to conserve energy for our planet.

These days, many homeowners are making a difference by installing solar panels onto their home as a way to save energy.  Often times, these are placed on a roof and  generate electricity from the sun.  Some are used to cover outdoor patios which would serve the dual purpose of saving electricity and providing shade.

If you are a do-it-yourself-er, you might find making your own  solar panels to be a much more cost effective solution. This is accomplished by purchasing the solar cells, mounting the frame and running the power.

And there are health benefits as well, such as the inhalation of gas being a non-factor.  In states like California, where the population has created the need to greatly reduce emission created by fuel and other chemicals that help to create smog, rebate programs and tax credits are available to homeowners who choose solar energy as part of their home.

Most utility companies also offer incentives to those by reducing a household’s energy bill by as much as 85% per month.  Some even offer credits back to residential customers called Solar Renew Energy Credits (SRECs), in the case of a home generating more solar power than needed.
